Charges laid in jail attack on Melvin Jr.

The Halifax Regional Police have laid two charges related to the July 1 attack on crime figure Jimmy Melvin, Jr.

Adam Joseph Leblanc, 21, was charged Thursday with aggravated assault and possession of a weapon after allegedly slashing Melvin’s face in the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility on Canada Day.

Leblanc had been jailed since November 2009 for failure to attend trial and assault causing bodily harm, and then further remanded on five firearm charges and one charge of drug trafficking.

A police spokesman would not speculate on whether the incident was gang-related, but added that both men were uncooperative with the investigation.
