University of Alberta students were given an unexpected break from class yesterday after a building was evacuated over fears of a chemical spill.
A group of plumbers were working on a ceiling drain in the chemistry building just before 10:00 a.m. when a small amount of liquid splashed out of the drain and on to one of the workers.
His skin quickly became irritated and he was rushed to hospital while emergency crews were called into evacuate the floor and run tests on the unknown substance.
The liquid turned out to be nothing more than dirty water, however, and students were able to return to the floor shortly before 1 p.m.
The plumber was not injured and resumed working in the afternoon.
