Chorus vocalists sing like real men

I’ve been told that I’m a terrible, monotonous singer.

So when I decided to take part in a rehearsal of Ottawa’s largest all-male a cappella group, I didn’t know what to expect.

The chorus practises for about three hours every Monday at the Ron Kolbus Lakeside Centre. By the time the rehearsal is finished, you’re out of breath — at least I was.

I was intimidated, and I wasn’t alone, even among more experienced singers.

Looking back on his first time, chorus member Chris MacMartin remembers being intimidated by “the powerful sound.

“You got 100 guys up here, so it’s a lot of good singers,” said MacMartin.

In the middle of the rehearsal, a youth quartet belted out Silver Bells like it was nobody’s business. The group said last year’s Christmas show was a success and are looking forward to doing it again.

“The show itself was fantastic — it was amazingly scripted and we (had) close to 1,000 people (in attendance),” said member Seth Bocknek.

Whether or not you can carry a tune, men of all ages are invited to rehearse and have fun.
