Citizens rallying against NW casino

Residents in one of Calgary’s northwest neighbourhoods are trying to ensure that city council does not go through with building a casino in their community.

Deepa Madhavan is behind the Facebook group “No Casino in Royal Oak, Calgary,” and said she and many of her neighbours have concerns.

“This is walking distance from our community, which is a big concern for us. We like this place as it is,” she said. “A casino is fine, but it should be outside the city.”

Madhavan said along with the Facebook group, her neighbour is building a website regarding the proposed project and she said they are looking into starting a petition.

Madhavan’s son Adarsh said he disagrees with the support put forward by Ward 2 Ald. Gord Lowe.

“Gord Lowe keeps saying that the crime rate will not increase in this area if there’s a casino … I don’t know where he’s getting the facts from, but it’s absolutely incorrect,” he said.

“It can ruin the very fabric of a community.”

Calls made to Lowe were not returned.
