City cyclists plan night ride to take back the road

Saturday night, Calgary cyclists plan to take back the road.

Riders will gather at Eau Claire Plaza, then head through downtown. They want to spread the message that you can enjoy the roads without polluting them.

“It creates awareness for cyclists being on the road, so people become more used to seeing them,” said 28-year-old Shannon Woloshyn, who has participated in past cycling events. “They will claim their spot on the road and fight back against cars.”

Although they have done it in the past, this will be their first major ride this year. Organizer Grant Neufeld said he expects up to 50 riders to show up, but thinks there should be more Calgarians supporting environmentally friendly transportation.

“In Vancouver they get 1,000 riders, and in San Francisco they can get 10,000,” he said. “Calgary still has a long way to go.”

Depending on the number of cyclists, they may try to occupy all lanes of traffic or just stick to one.
