Edmontonians love their pets, say organizers behind the seventh annual Pet Expo held at the Northlands Agricom over the weekend.
In fact, they love their pets so much, officials might have to consider expanding, says show producer Louise Reinich.
“We treat our pets like children now because people are having fewer children and as people are getting older more children are leaving home,” said Reinich. Since the first expo in 2001, Reinich says the number of exhibitors has steadily grown by 10 per cent.
More businesses are also sprouting up to pamper pets, including the Cabana Pet Resort and Spa near Leduc because of the baby boomer generation, says the resort’s co-ordinator.
“When they come to our resort, they’re just spoiled and it’s OK to spoil them though,” said Charlene Deweerd. “There’s a high demand for this because more people want the best for their dogs.”
