City eyes safe bike routes as part of 10-year cycling plan

Vancouver is looking to add 55 kilometres of safe bike routes within the next two years, Coun. Geoff Meggs said yesterday.

The new 10-year Cycling Program Master Plan is set to go to city council later this week.

The plan will also look to improve safety and accessibility for commuters and make improvements to on-street bicycle parking.

“The more people we can get (onto) bikes, the better,” said Meggs. “The critical factor for people is safety.”

The cycling plan is part of Vancouver’s Greenest City by 2020 initiative.

“We’ve made a lot of improvements to Vancouver’s bike network in the past 18 months, but we need to do more if we want to meet our target of making cycling 10 per cent of all trips by 2020,” Mayor Gregor Robertson said in a release.
