City given eight days to find spare $35M

Mayor Naheed Nenshi will put forward a notice of motion Monday asking for an additional $35 million in possible cuts, but some aldermen doubt it will happen in such a short timeframe.

Administration will have only eight days between Monday’s council meeting and the srategic planning session on Nov. 16 and 17 to find additional areas to cut.

“It took them six months to find out where to find the money for the $60 million, so I don’t know how we’re going to get it done in a week. It takes a bit of time,” said Ald. Ray Jones.

“I guess it’s reasonable to ask; whether it’s reasonable to expect it is another thing. If you don’t ask, you’ll never receive.”

Ald. Dale Hodges said he believes administration has already been looking for other areas to trim.

Monday will mark council’s first regular meeting of since the election.
