City grants theatre $175K to pay off loan

The city is giving the Great Canadian Theatre Company $175,000 to help it make payment on the loan it took out in 2007 to build the Irving Greenberg Theatre Centre.

The company had planned to pay off the loan through a fundraiser that suffered during last year’s recession.

Gloucester-South Nepean Coun. Steve Desroches suggested the money should be given to the GCTC as an interest-free loan instead of a grant, with the money coming from funds set aside for the Ottawa Concert Hall, still in the planning stages.

However, Kitchissippi Ward Coun. Christine Leadman argued that offering a loan to help pay off a loan does not really make sense, even if it is interest-free.

City council decided that the GCTC would not have to repay the money, but funds would still come from interest earned on the money set aside for the concert hall.
