City hopes to monopolize board game vote

City officials are now playing the waiting game in eager anticipation of public voting results that could cement Edmonton’s place in Canadian Monopoly.

“Edmontonians have a lot of pride, they want to see their city on the board,” City of Edmonton spokesman Robert Moyles said yesterday.

The city sat in sixth place last week, a ranking earned after police officers staged a mock arrest of ex-city councillor Michael Phair.

After the public plea for votes, the city rose from 11th place. At its lowest point, Edmonton sat in the 23rd slot.

“Edmontonians really rallied to the cause,” Moyles said.

Online voting ended last night. Standings, once public on the website, have now been concealed by Hasbro.

“I’ve taken the leader board away to add a little mystery to the final placement of cities on the new board,” a statement on monopolyvote.ca reads.

The 20 cities with the highest number of votes will be given a permanent home on the board.

From today until Feb. 21, voters can put in for their favourite Wildcard entry. Jasper and Banff are among the list of 20 cities, though only two will be selected.

Official results will be posted in June.
