Ottawa police have charged a 35-year-old Ottawa man in the fatal stabbing of a woman.
Tamrat Gebere faces a charge of second-degree murder. He’s to appear in court this morning.
The victim, whose name has not been released pending the notification of her family, was found dead in her seventh-floor apartment at 1541 Riverside Dr. Saturday afternoon.
A post-mortem is scheduled today.
The Ottawa Police Major Crime Section said the crime appears to be a domestic homicide.
Several residents of the building interviewed by Metro expressed shock at violence in what they describe as a quiet place.
“The building is a very nice building,” said Abdul Awal, who has operated a convenience store on its ground floor for more than 10 years. “There’s no complaints.”
Awal said he believes he saw the victim earlier Saturday afternoon, sitting in the building’s lobby with her young child and another woman. He later saw the child with police, he said.
“I heard that she was murdered and I’m so upset,” he said. “I’m so sorry.”
