City may be giving Powell Street a lift with overpass

Vancouver is considering a $37-million overpass to lift Powell Street over the Burrard Inlet rail line, west of Raymur Avenue.

It would create room for another east/west rail line along the waterfront and would eliminate train-related traffic disruptions on Powell Street.

A report before council tomorrow recommends the city support, in-principle, proceeding with the “Powell Street Rail Grade Separation,” subject to funding from Transport Canada and other partners.

Transport Canada, which is expected to recommend the overpass as part of its South Shore Trade Area Study, hopes to reach an agreement-in-principle on the strategy by June.

The project could be eligible for funding through the Asia-Pacific Gateway and Corridor Initiative.

The proposed overpass would stretch three blocks east along Powell Street from Hawks Avenue.
