Health groups are applauding council’s recent decision to reject a proposed pesticide bylaw and are asking for a stronger pesticide bylaw but two city aldermen say that won’t happen anytime soon.
The Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) praised the city for its effort to address the issue, but believe the rejected amendment was not acceptable. “We’re glad this one didn’t pass because it would not have provided sufficient protection and it really would have only entrenched the status quo and mislead Calgarians,” CCS co-ordinator Evie Rodway said.
Rodway is urging council to redirect city administration to come back with a stronger bylaw; however council killed the bylaw yesterday for good.
Ward 11 Ald. Brian Pincott said despite 85 per cent of Calgarians wanting a pesticide bylaw, current council members don’t seem to be on the same page.
“Frankly, I don’t think that will happen until after next election,” he said.
Ward 9 Ald. Druh Farrell agreed and compared the issue to the smoking bylaw.
“I think we will get there eventually and Calgarians will appreciate it,” she said.
