City pet adoptions seeing steep spike

Pet adoptions in New York City are booming. In the last four years, the number of cats and dogs taken home from area shelters jumped by 46 percent, according to Animal Care & Control of New York City.

“We’ve seen a tremendous increase,” said Richard Gentles, a spokesperson for AC&C. “[People] are hearing the horror stories of the puppy mills that supply the pet shops. Second, they literally save a life by adopting from a shelter.”

The Tobins of Brooklyn are one of the families that have decided to join the trend. In November, they adopted Willy, a Cavalier King Charles spaniel and collie mix, and they had no doubt that adopting was the right thing to do.

Willy was a birthday present for their youngest son, but the whole family enjoys the little puppy.
“We wouldn’t even think about going to the pet shop. There’s so many dogs out there that need a home,” said dad Matthew Tobin.
