City’s advice online for green thumbs

The city’s parks department has turned to the web to educate local green thumbs.

With growing demands for the city’s Healthy Yards program, officials plan to offer virtual advice for
Calgarians looking to beautify their personal green spaces and make them more sustainable.

Simon Wilkins, the city’s integrated pest management co-ordinator, said the program plans to use its newly unveiled YouTube site and DVDs to reach out to environmentally conscious homeowners without resorting to reams of paper pamphlets.

Wilkins said the technology will allow interested homeowners to key on items of interest including composting, water conservation, beneficial plants, lawn care and managing pests.
