City’s post-secondary institutions granted $18.7M

Five Ottawa schools will share a total of $18.7 million, Ontario’s minister of training, colleges and universities announced at uOttawa yesterday.

The University of Ottawa will receive $11.8 million; Carleton University $2 million; Dominican University College $50,000; Algonquin College $3.9 million; and La Cité collégiale $939,000 as a part of the province’s one-time supplementary funding of $155 million to help post-secondary institutions maintain their financial health, said Minister John Milloy.

“Today’s announcement is about post-secondary education, but what it’s really about is the economy, which is top of mind for everyone, I think, in the province of Ontario,” said Milloy.

“I think everyone recognizes that ours is an economy in transition.

“The only way that Ontario is going to emerge from this current economic storm stronger than ever is if we have the most skilled, highly educated workforce,” he said.

The recent speech from the throne set out “the very ambitious agenda,” Milloy added, “of making sure 70 per cent of Ontarians have a post-secondary credential.”

“It’s really important … that we make sure education is front and centre of our economic plan because, at the end of the day, the students that we are acknowledging are going to be the engine of our economy and we have to make sure that we continue to invest in them,” said Ottawa Centre MPP Yasir Naqvi.

“We need to ensure that our post-secondary education institutions have the resources they need to accommodate this growth,” said Ottawa-Vanier MPP Madeleine Meilleur.
