Toronto councillors have decided against setting up a system that would use taxpayer dollars to cover the legal expenses of councillors who sue citizens.

But at the same time, they voted yesterday to do exactly that for Coun. Sandra Bussin.

A policy that city solicitor Anna Kinastowski drafted suggested referring any request for such funding to an outside lawyer, who would determine if the potentially defamatory statements made about a councillor would undermine public confidence in government.

If the answer was yes, council would then decide whether to fund the offended councillor’s lawsuit.
