City teen on ‘best job’ shortlist

An Edmonton teen has surpassed almost 35,000 people around the globe who had their sites set on one job.

Linda Hoang, 19, was selected as one of the 50 short-listed applicants for the “best job in the world” and is reaching out to fellow Edmontonians to push her across the finish line.

“I’m really hoping all of Edmonton gets behind me on this,” she said with a laugh.

Judges will pick 10 finalists by March 24, while the rest of the world chooses one wild card winner. The finalist with the most votes cast on the website will jet off with the select group to Hamilton Island, Australia in May for final interviews.

“It’s crazy competitive,” she said yesterday. “I watched all 50 videos last night and I was just shocked at how good they are.”

The journalism student feels she’s the ideal candidate for the coveted role of Great Barrier Reef island caretaker, because she’d report on the island through the eyes of a tourist — the target market organizers are after.

“I would be the regular tourist, representing, well, the regular tourist,” she said.

Of all those shortlisted, Hoang is the youngest. She joins six other Canadians, including three from B.C. and three from Ontario.
