City, transportation ministry gear up for random seatbelt checks

With the 2009 Spring Seatbelt Campaign underway, the Ottawa Ontario Provincial Police, in partnership with the Ministry of Transportation and other road safety partners, will be increasingly visible checking for seatbelt compliance of all passengers.

The campaign, which runs from April 15 to 26, will also see random checks of vehicles equipped with child seat restraints by the Ottawa Provincial Traffic Detachment.

Lasts year’s campaign saw the OPP issue over 15,000 offences for seatbelt non-compliance, which draws a fine of $110 and two demerit points.

Last year alone, 78 deaths were attributed to seatbelt non-compliance on Ontario highways.
