City unveils green fleet options

The City of Ottawa took a step into the future yesterday when it unveiled some “green” technology presently in its municipal fleet — as well as possible vehicles in its future.

The city brought in hybrid and other green-friendly cars, trucks and even an ice resurfacer designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality in the nation’s capital —key components of its new Municipal Green Fleet Plan.

“From the use of alternate fuels to a wide range of fuel-efficient hybrid vehicles, the City of Ottawa will be making significant progress in reducing its environmental impact,” said Mayor Larry O’Brien. “The other advantage is the Municipal Green Fleet Plan provides economic savings for the taxpayers of Ottawa.”

Reducing emissions is the city’s moral responsibility, said Coun. Rainer Bloess. “This is part of a far broader global movement, and we have to make sure we’re doing our part.”
