Cape Breton North MLA Cecil Clarke made it official Thursday, announcing he will seek the Conservative nomination in federal riding of Sydney-Victoria in next election.

Clarke won’t resign from his Cape Breton North seat immediately because the federal government has given no hint it wants to hold a snap election this fall.

Elections Nova Scotia spokesperson Dana Doiron said Clarke must step down as MLA prior to officially being declared a candidate in the federal race. The Nova Scotia Liberals are calling on Clarke to step down from his seat immediately.
