Close call for prisoners in van crash

LEDUC, Alta. – Nine prisoners on their way to court near Edmonton had a close call when their transfer van caught fire after a crash.

Police say several vehicles were involved in the highway collision near Leduc.

Early indications suggest the prisoner van, which was being operated by two sheriffs, was struck from behind.

There was enough time to get the inmates out and no injuries were reported.

The Queen Elizabeth 2 Highway had to be closed temporarily to southbound traffic.
