Closer than some incumbents liked

It was a rocky ride for several members of the old city council on election night.

Ward 11 Ald. Brian Pincott and Ward 7 Ald. Druh Farrell were involved in very close races for a return spot on council, and Ward 14 Ald. Linda-Fox Mellway actually finished third in her riding with just over 5,000 votes.

Farrell said she “expected it to be a close race” and thinks the number of voters who turned out is fantastic.

Her theory on the tough battle at the ballots?

“I think the biggest factor is the boundary changes and there are new communities in my ward and we don’t know each other yet. But I am excited to get to know them,” she told Metro yesterday.

Farrell beat out her nearest contender, Kevin Taylor, by just over a thousand votes.

New Ward 14 Ald. Peter Demong beat out Fox-Mellway and said it is a message from voters to city hall.

“I think people want to feel like they are being listened to and communicated with,” he said.

Political analyst DJ Kelly agreed.

“I think it will be interesting to see how the new faces mesh,” he said.
