Coach wants Frk to be ‘greedier’

Martin Frk, the green light is yours.

When you get a chance to shoot, the coach says do it.

As Cam Russell puts it: “Be a little greedier.”

“He’s in that mindset he doesn’t want to be a selfish guy. He wants to share the puck and he’s sharing it too much,” the Halifax Mooseheads coach says of his highly touted rookie.

“He’s got opportunities to score and he’s just not taking them.”

Frk, who turned 17 last week, is off to a solid start in the QMJHL with 11 points in 12 games. That includes three goals.

But the six-foot, 190-pound forward from the Czech Republic has fired just 16 shots on goal. This, despite possessing what Russell calls an “NHL-calibre shot.”

“All good goalscorers have to have a little bit of greediness to them,” Russell says. “He’s such a good, nice kid, he’s trying to fit in. He’s trying to share the puck. He’s just going to have to be a little greedier.”

Still, Russell is pleased with what he’s seen from Frk through the first dozen games.

“He’s doing fine and we know he’s going to be an impact player for years.”
