Can free beat the hope of an SUV?

McDonald’s Canada, flush with the success of last year’s frontal assault on coffee king Tim Hortons, has declared all-out war on one of Canadians’ favourite late winter fantasies: Roll Up The Rim To Win.

As Tim’s opened its 24th annual thumbfest yesterday with prizes ranging from an SUV to a free doughnut, the fast food behemoth started handing out free coffee for two weeks, no purchase required.

McDonald’s third giveaway promotion in a year is timed “to continue the excitement of the Olympics,” said Stephanie Sorensen, McDonald’s manager of communications for Ontario.

It has, she said, nothing to do with Tim’s Roll Up The Rim To Win campaign.

If that wasn’t enough for java junkies, Country Style is handing out free medium coffees tomorrow morning.
