The construction of the North Edmonton Ring Road from Yellowhead Trail on the west side of the city to the Manning Drive Freeway has gobbled up another chunk of Edmonton.

The provincial government announced yesterday the purchase of Newman Theological College and St. Joseph’s Seminary, two catholic institutions directly in the path of the ring road.

“We’ve actually been in discussions with the government about this issue since 2005,” said the college’s president Bryn Kulmatycki.

“It became clear to us that the realignment and scope of the project had changed since20 years ago, when we were first involved.”

The college and seminary, on St. Albert Tr., are in the direct path of the proposed north corridor, a 21-km north leg of the ring road.

Construction of the North Edmonton Ring Road is expected to begin next year and the college has promised to relocate by 2009.
