Common the place to gather this summer

If you plan on playing baseball or Frisbee on the Halifax Common this summer, be aware it’s going to be a very busy place.

To kick things off, the Cancer Society will be hosting a Relay for Life on the Central Common on Friday.

The Common will then accommodate one of the largest powwows in the nation from June 25 to June 27. The Mawio’mi Pow-Wow will celebrate the 400th anniversary of the baptism of Grand Chief Henri Membertou. Activities for this event will occur on the majority of the Common and admission is free.

Two large rock concerts will occur on the North Common in the late summer. On July 23 and 24, Kid Rock, Weezer, and the Black Eyed Peas will be performing in Halifax Rocks 2010.

Johnny Reid and Alan Jackson will be headlining Country Rocks 2010 on August 6 and 7.

But it doesn’t end with the summer. HRM employees will get to work in the fall preparing the Common as the site of the speed skating oval for the 2011 Canada Winter games in February.
