Competitors going head to head

Last year, Joe Oppedisano was out for a night on the town when he entered a beer-pouring contest on a whim — and unexpectedly won.

Not only that, but the real estate agent, who “had never bartended before,” went on to become the Canada Draught Master and placed second in the world finals of the Stella Artois Draught Master Competition.

“I didn’t realize how much was involved,” said Oppedisano.

This Saturday, he will be the master of ceremonies at the Ottawa finals of the Stella Artois Draught Master Competition at Lago.

Contestants will be judged according to the nine-step pouring ritual, which involves creating the foam at the top of the glass and chopping off the top layer.

“Before I learned to pour properly, I was a non-believer,” said Oppedisano. “But it does make a difference.”

Saturday’s winner will move on to complete in the Canadian championship in Toronto next weekend.
