Congressman David Wu resigns amidst sex allegations

After several tumultuous months of allegations regarding strange and inappropriate behavior, Democratic Congressman David Wu has announced he will resign… but not quite yet.

In a statement, Wu said, “with great sadness, I therefore intend to resign effective upon the resolution of the debt-ceiling crisis.”

He went on to say, “I cannot care for my family the way I wish while serving in Congress and fighting these very serious allegations.” Recent allegations of aggressive and unwanted sexual behavior came from the teenage daughter of one of Wu’s campaign contributors, the Oregonian newspaper reported. Representative Nancy Pelosi had called for an ethics investigation Monday, just one day before Wu announced he plans to step down.

The public backlash began for Wu months ago after he sent bizarre emails, including a photo of himself in a tiger costume to his staffers. Several of his staff members reportedly resigned in February. Wu said publicly that he sought mental health treatment following the incidents. After the most recent allegations were made public, Wu’s democratic colleagues began calling for his resignation.

He ended his statement by saying, “It is also the only correct decision to avoid any distraction from the important work at hand in Washington. I intend to go forward with new resolve and love of family, the State of Oregon, and our nation.”
