Construction safety committee mulls weather advisory

Exploring the feasibility of an early warning weather system is the first move of a construction safety committee formed after a young girl died last year from falling debris.

The City of Calgary and the Calgary Construction Association formed a construction site safety committee to address safety issues on and near construction sites, according to the city’s chief building official Kevin Griffiths, and the first move is to look at the feasibility of a third party to provide an early warning weather system.

“We’re looking to find proactive ways to ensure the safety of citizens and construction workers so future safety accidents don’t occur,” Griffiths said.

Griffiths said the early weather warning system would in theory provide construction sites advance notice of upcoming storms so everything could be secured properly.

The committee was formed after three-year-old Michelle Krsek was killed on Aug. 1, 2009 when she was struck with a piece of debris from a downtown construction site during a windstorm.
