Ontario's Ministry of Consumer Services said they began an investigation after an elderly couple in Nepean complained after hiring a renovator to repair the foundation of their home and to replace their asphalt driveway with interlocking bricks.
Over the course of two weeks, there were more repair costs added, a ministry release said.
The court found that the couple was charged $30,000 for work valued at less than $5,000.
The ministry stated that they worked closely with Ottawa police and the City of Ottawa’s building code services, compliance and enforcement unit in investigating the matter.
The accused was not present in court at the time of sentencing and a bench warrant has been issued for his arrest.
Hubert Belisle of H.B. Pro-Expert Renovations, was sentenced to 75 days in jail for engaging in unfair practices, two years probation and ordered to pay a total of $29,643 in restitution.
