Contractor, partners found liable

An Ontario court has found a Vaughan landscape contractor and two partners liable for more than $3 million plus interest for corruption at the provincial government’s real estate arm a decade ago.

Mr. Justice Frank Newbould said in a ruling released yesterday that Frank Gabriele, a key player in the Vaughan-based Gabriele Group of companies, engaged in manipulation of bids for an environmental cleanup contract and three land sales with Ontario Realty Corp. staff and subsequently profited from them.

The judgment capped a nine-year legal odyssey that started with 50 individuals, companies and civil servants being sued.
