Basic beige never looked so cool. For its latest designer collaboration, Gap is returning to its roots.

This year’s Gap Design Editions will focus on khaki, a staple that was once synonymous with the retailer.

The khaki items are reinterpreted by this year’s Council of Fashion Designers of America/Vogue Fashion Fund winners Albertus Swanepoel, Alexander Wang and the two designers behind the Vena Cava label, Lisa Mayock and Sophie Buhai.

The partnership between the giant retailer and the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund was established to elevate the profiles of young, up-and-coming designers. This marks the third year in which Gap has featured these special collections.

The limited-edition khaki collection is now on sale at the Toronto Eaton Centre, Bloor St. W. and Yorkdale Gap locations only.

But don’t expect a basic khaki pant — the designers are among the hippest names emerging in American fashion today. The basic beige workman’s fabric has been reworked into cool items that reflect each designer’ s signature look.

And bets are already on that it will be the cropped motorcycle jacket by Alexander Wang — one of the hottest labels in New York and a favourite of models — that will be first to sell out.
