Cop’s plea date delayed till March

The plea of a Halifax Regional Police officer charged with extortion and drug possession was put off yesterday until March.

Defence lawyer Joel Pink, appearing on behalf of Const. Jeffrey Buchanan, said he had received disclosure less than a week ago and hadn’t had time to review it.

“We just received disclosure, which consists of the police brief to the Crown, plus there’s approximately eight or nine videos that have to be reviewed,” Pink said outside of the courtroom at Halifax provincial court.

“You have to sit down to meet with your client and essentially discuss the whole situation.”

That meeting is scheduled within the next two weeks. A new court date has been set for March 9.

Buchanan is facing charges of extortion and breach of trust stemming from a December police investigation. A subsequent search of his house led to one count of possession of marijuana being added.
