Cops investigate pair of vicious assaults

Police are investigating after two brazen downtown assaults early Sunday morning.

Police said two couples were walking near 100 Street and 100A Avenue around 12:45 a.m. when they were attacked by a group of men and one woman. One of the men was held against a wall, and the other was beaten.

The attackers fled, and the beaten man was rushed to hospital.

About 15 minutes later, a couple were leaving the Starlite Room at 102 Street south of Jasper Avenue, when their parked car was nearly struck by a van as it entered the parking lot.

Police said people from inside the van approached, and the man was attacked outside the vehicle and the woman was attacked as she sat inside.

Police said the assailants — two women and six men — fled on foot.

The male victim was rushed to hospital with two stab wounds, and the female victim was treated for minor injuries.

No clear link between the two incidents has been established, EPS spokeswoman Karen Carlson said, adding the groups of attackers varied in numbers and genders.

Investigators are gathering information about the identities of the suspects, she said, adding anyone with information is encouraged to call police.
