Cops lay kidnap charge

Police have laid charges in connection with an alleged kidnapping and sexual assault earlier this week.

Steven Elliot Laffin, 35, of Dartmouth, faces charges of kidnapping, forcible confinement, aggravated sexual assault and uttering death threats.

Late Monday night, police were called to the 2000 block of Old Sambro Road, regarding reports of a woman knocking on a door of a residence, asking for help.

The woman told police she had been picked up on Dentith Road in Spryfield by a man who allegedly tied her up, sexually assault her and locked her in the trunk of his car.

Police spokesman Const. Brian Palmeter said they believe the interaction started amicably. He also said the woman was taken to another location where she was allegedly “assaulted, restrained and put in the rear of the car.”

The woman managed to get free and flee her assailant, police say.

A man matching the description arrived at the Spryfield Community Office later that night, apparently on an unrelated matter, and was arrested.

Appearance
Steven Elliott Laffin appeared in Halifax provincial court yesterday and was remanded to the Nova Scotia Correctional Facility in Burnside, pending a show cause hearing on Aug. 26.
