Gatineau police said Thursday they have identified an important witness after a fire destroyed a historic Aylmer church last month.
Police had issued a composite sketch in hopes the public would be able to help identify the man, who was seen in the St. Paul Church parking lot half an hour before the blaze started in the early hours of June 11.
Police later said they found evidence of a break and enter and a gas can near the church.
After an investigation, Gatineau police said Thursday that they have identified the age and brand of the gasoline can found at the scene.
Police believe the red, 10-litre gasoline can was purchased in the last few months from a Canadian Tire store. Investigators are now asking area residents who bought a gasoline can from a Canadian Tire store since last spring to make sure that they are still in possession of it.
