Cops search for missing Calgary boater on B.C. lake

A 20-year-old Calgarian is missing and presumed drowned after jumping from a boat travelling at high speeds on Kamloops Lake and into the water earlier this week.

RCMP say the man was wakeboarding with three others Monday when for no apparent reason he jumped into the 300-foot lake without a lifejacket while the boat was travelling at speeds of approximately 50 km/h.

“Something happened when he hit the water — we don’t know what — but something happened and he went straight down,” Kamloops RCMP Sgt. Scott Wilson said, adding a friend jumped in after him seconds later, but it was too late.

“They didn’t see him again. We suspect he just went straight down and we’ve been searching for him.”

Although no body has been recovered, a coroner has been called in to work with RCMP, Wilson added.

While his name hasn’t been released yet, Wilson said the man was a longtime Kamloops resident and moved to Calgary several months ago. Investigators say alcohol was not a factor.
