A city councillor is looking to ramp up the city’s efforts to offer in-kind assistance to Haiti during this time of need.

River Ward Coun. Maria McRae is hoping to pass a motion at today’s corporate services and economic development committee recommending city council approve a number of measures to provide assistance to the people of Haiti as soon as possible.

The measures include having the city manager offer city staff support and expertise to assist rebuilding key infrastructure in the affected areas in Haiti.

The city would also offer full cooperation to the federal government to provide assistance to Haiti, including setting up an emergency committee with made up of infrastructure, public safety, environmental and emergency services personnel that would create an action plan to determine ways to aid.

The committee would have to waive the rules of procedure in order to consider the motion on short notice.
