Council OK’s review of 911 hang-ups

An extensive review of the 911 hang-ups in the city will move ahead after council approved the measure yesterday.

Aldermen brought anecdotal evidence of some of the system’s possible concerns all concurring with motion-bearer Ald. Diane Colley-Urquhart’s belief that approximately 5,000 annual hang-ups are a burden on the 911 system.

“I am concerned about the whole nature of the PSC (Public Safety Communication) and how it’s overwhelmed — and this can lead to … more calls and more investigations, which will hamper our ability to get to people that really truly do need help,” said Ald. John Mar.

Dr. Erika Hargasheimer of the city said they would review 911 hang-ups and cover best practices, possible fees for repeated hang-ups, alarm systems, possible deterrents and public education.
