In a 10 to five vote, council voted to eliminate the Park and Ride fee come April 2011.
At a cost of around $6.1 million, the fee will be replaced by a reserved parking system at a cost to those who wish to secure a spot.
“Calgarians want this,” said Jim Stevenson moments before council voted. “There’s no question they want this.”
Ald. Brian Pincott expressed his concern over eliminating the fee without knowing the full repercussions.
The tax rate increase now sits more than six per cent.
