Council votes to set city’s information free

Open source data provided by the city could soon be coming to an iPhone application near you after committee approved access to city data and services yesterday.

While Ward 11 Ald. Brian Pincott said the open data plan still has to be approved by council, he expects open access to data to be in place by the summer in Calgary, paving the way for future mobile phone technologies.

“IPhone applications are just blossoming out there, and I see the potential for Calgarians to have a completely different relationship with the city and how they use the city,” Pincott said.

Pincott said he hopes to see applications where users can use the data to customize bike routes, track the closest coffee shops to dog parks and plan their recreation activities all by phone.

“There is no question people will start seeing these applications,” Pincott added.
