Councillor budgets curbed

Gone are the bunny suit rentals, espresso machines and limousine rides for constituents.

Under stiffer new rules for how councillors spend their $53,100 office budgets, the city clerk’s office now has ultimate say over all such expenses.

There’s no more alcohol, business meals have been capped at $500 a year, and expenses have been posted online since late last year.

Among the items they can’t expense are personal long-distance calls, mileage or taxi rides for regular travel from home to city hall, vehicle licensing fees, traffic or parking fines, and car wash fees.

Among items they can expense are donations to community groups, two charity event tickets per year, and design and hosting fees for websites.
