Councillors shelve TTC debate for now

Still reeling from the sudden weekend strike, angry passengers who want to see the TTC declared an essential service will have to wait at least until September to see what city council will do.

Councillors Cesar Palacio and Cliff Jenkins wanted the matter discussed at yesterday’s council meeting, but without two-thirds support for introducing a debate, council voted instead to send the matter to the executive committee for further study.

While Premier Dalton McGuinty has said he would be willing to consider designating the TTC an essential service if asked, he cautioned council to go slow yesterday.

“If you ever make a decision when emotions are running high in reaction to unfortunate circumstances you don’t tend to end up with the best possible public policy,” McGuinty said.
