Councillors to get raise in 2011

The dawn of the new year will also herald a new era of pay raises for members of Vancouver’s city council.

The dawn of the new year will also herald a new era of pay raises for members of Vancouver’s city council.

This year’s adjustment will hike the annual pay of councillors 3.1 per cent, to nearly $64,000, while the salary of Mayor Gregor Robertson will increase at the same rate, to reach $144,000.

Vancouver councillors remain far from the best-paid employees at city hall, however, and are actually drawing much lower salaries than those of senior staff — many of whom are paid at least twice as much as the mayor himself. Several high-ranking city officials, including the city manager, deputy city manager, and city solicitor, all bring in more than $200,000 a year.

Coun. Suzanne Anton said that high pay for bureaucrats is necessary to attract and retain talent but that the same is true for politicians.
