Eight years ago aspiring Vancouver swimsuit designer Anna Kosturova designed a lime green crocheted, sequined bikini that turned so many heads on the beach it inspired her to go into the industry.

This week that same swimsuit has won Kosturova what she calls the Academy Award of the industry — the cover of Sports Illustrated’s swimsuit edition.

The 2008 edition, which is in stores now, features supermodel Marisa Miller in the blue version of Kosturova’s Beach Goddess bikini.

"It’s my signature piece," she said. "It’s how I started."

Now she said the orders are pouring in.

"For us in the business, this is like the Bible. To be on the front page is just a huge thing."

Kosturova said once suits are submitted to Sports Illustrated everything is out of her hands, from the models, the accessories, and how, or even if, the suits are featured.

"We knew something got in because we were asked to submit the credits. But we didn’t know if it was going to be in print or online only."

Kosturova said it still hasn’t sunk in that she got the cover, even as she held the magazine in her hands.

She added it’s fitting that of all the suits she’s designed, it’s her first ever suit that’s brought her the industry’s most coveted award.

"It’s validating."
