Identity theft. If it can happen to an employee of the Calgary Police Service, it can happen to anyone. CPS media specialist Michelle Dassinger was shocked when a woman called her asking about a job posting on Kijiji; she never posted a job, nor gave out her email or phone number, but someone did.

“After speaking with this woman who said I emailed her and gave her my information, I called Kijiji and found out they already red flagged the person using my information for suspected fraudulent activities,” Dassinger said.

More concerning to Dassinger is the motive behind the suspected identity theft. “I may never know but I learned a lot of things in this process about how to protect myself.”

Dassinger said people should remain cautious about information they share online.
This week is online safety week.
