Ottawa Fire Services are taking a zero-tolerance approach to residents who start unauthorized open-air fires, in response to the rash of recent grass fires.
Open-air fires were cited as the cause to several recent emergency calls, and many resulted in property damage.
A permit for open-air fires must be obtained by property owners living at an address that allows open-air fires. Also, an open air permit holder must contact Ottawa Fire Services prior to the burn to verify if any restrictions, such as dry or windy condition, are in place.
Fines for failure to comply with the city’s open air bylaw range from $100 to $5,000 for each violation. Ottawa Fire Services reserves the right to revoke a permit for not complying with the bylaw regulations.
