Cries for help misinterpreted as joke: RCMP

An exchange student from Korea is on life support after nearly drowning in a lake near Vernon, Mounties said yesterday.

The 23-year-old Okanagan College student and his friends went for a swim on Kalamalka Lake on Friday evening, said RCMP spokesperson Gordon Molendyk.

He said the student started having difficulties shortly after jumping in the water.

“Bystanders didn’t recognize he was in trouble right away,” Molendyk added.

The man was unconscious when he was pulled from the shallow water. Responding paramedics administered first aid before taking him to a local hospital. On Sunday, he was moved to Vancouver General Hospital.

Molendyk said the young man’s parents were on their way to visit him from Korea when RCMP contacted them.
