Overall crime in Ottawa fell by 2.6 per cent in 2009, according to an annual report by the Ottawa Police Services.

The review, released today, confirms the fourth straight year of an overall crime decrease in the nation’s capital. It reveals that the number of police officers in the city reached 1,356 in 2009, a four per cent increase from 2008. The police budget has also increased, growing by six per cent in 2009 to more than $230 million.

According to Chief Vern White, the report represents the service’s commitment to remain accountable and transparent.

Preliminary performance figures and statistics on public calls for service, crime and traffic stats, and a breakdown of the cost of policing the area are also in the report.
